What’s the Difference Between Prefab, Zero Clearance or Manufactured Fireplace Doors?

You’ve heard the terms prefab or pre-fabricated fireplace glass doors, zero clearance or manufactured glass doors, or factory built fireplace doors, but do they all mean the same thing? The answer is…Yes. All these terms describe fireplaces with a firebox made out of metal instead of masonry material such as brick. Some common manufacturers of factory built/zero clearance fireplaces include Lennox, Superior, Marco, Heatilator, and Superior. The fireplace doors for factory built fireplaces need to fit properly in the firebox opening so that the fireplace can have a little air space around the edges. If you’re looking for the brand name or model number of your zero clearance fireplace, check in the upper corners of the firebox opening to see if there’s a metal plate with that information.
