Andirons, also known as firedogs, are accessories that can add a charming touch to your fireplace. Andirons are metal bars that are used to lay logs upon for burning in an open fireplace. They rest upon short legs and have an upright guard, which is often ornamentally decorated with patterns or heraldic symbols. They can be made of iron, steel, copper, bronze, or silver and provide a more sophisticated look to your fireplace.
Originally andirons were made of cast iron and were very plain as they were designed to be a practical tool for maintaining the fire and for cooking. They were used as a rest for a roasting spit or may have had a cup shaped top to hold porridge. Sometimes the upright bar branched out in order to hold pots for stewing. They became more decorative after the Renaissance period, and today some of the most detailed ones are showcased in museums.
Andirons often depicted animals, mythological figures and heroic characters. Today andirons are also called firedogs because that was a common figure to be represented at the base. The variety of styles and depictions is truly amazing.
Though it is doubtful that today they will be used in the same way as in the past, andirons give a vintage feeling to your fireplace. Not only are they a practical way of maintaining the fireplace lit, they are also a beautiful accessory to have around the fire.
