For almost everyone, fireplaces conjure up a soothing, peaceful image. But when your fireplace gets a little messy (and it will), a thorough cleaning may be in order.

The most obvious offenders when it comes to keeping your fireplace tidy are the ashes and residue that smoke can leave behind in your home. Once these issues are dealt with, you’re still left with some really tough stains to remove from your glass fireplace doors.

Thanks to the flames and the heat generated by a fire, your glass fireplace doors can present some real cleaning challenges. Here are some tips to help you restore them to their original sheen.

-First, make sure your glass fireplace doors have cooled down before touching them.

-Next, once they have cooled, scrape off any thick gunk deposits with a razor blade.

-Add a couple of squirts of dishwashing detergent to a bucket of warm water, or add a cup of vinegar to a gallon of water.  I’ve found that cleaning the glass with the soapy water first, then once dry wiping it down with the vinegar solution is the most thorough method here.

-Wipe any residue away with newspaper, which is lint-free.

There are also some great products on the market made just for your glass fireplace doors, like Rutland’s Conditioning Glass Cleaner, which leaves a layer of silicone on the glass, to make cleaning the doors even easier the next time.

Regardless of which method you choose, there’s nothing more peaceful and relaxing than watching a fire burn slowly in your fireplace, so why not make the experience that much more pleasant, and get your glass doors glistening again?
